Youngstown Ohio News Correspondent Short biography of Karen S. Kastner

Karen S. Kastner, who has lived most of her life in the Mahoning Valley, is a former newspaper reporter and editor and a former public relations executive. Highlights of her career include serving as the first woman Mahoning County Courthouse reporter for The Vindicator (writing under the byline Karen Guy), becoming editor of a daily newspaper in Pennsylvania, serving as director of internal communication for a Fortune 500 Company and writing for the Chautauqua Institution in New York.

In addition, she has taught and tutored English and journalism part and full time at several Ohio colleges and universities for 28 years. Formerly, she was coordinator of media writing, the first writing-intensive course for journalism majors, at Kent State University.

Ms. Kastner holds a bachelor’s degree in English with a minor in journalism and a master’s degree in English with concentration in professional and technical writing and editing from Youngstown State University. She also attended both Kent State University and the University of Oxford in England. She is all but dissertation for a doctorate in English.

A published poet, she enjoys walking in Mill Creek MetroPark, swimming, reading and knitting, and she is writing a play.
